What is Agent Perception Optimization?
Agent Perception Optimization (APO) is the practice of measuring and improving how AI agents perceive your brand, from how ChatGPT describes your company to how a procurement agent compares you against competitors.
SEO optimizes for ranking algorithms that determine position. APO optimizes for perception algorithms that determine how AI agents describe and recommend your brand. The output of SEO is a position on a page. The output of APO is the accuracy of every AI statement about your organization.
The term was coined by Optagen.ai. APO provides the measurement framework (the AX Score) and the playbook for an accurate AI perception of your brand.
Why APO Matters Now
Three trends make APO urgent for any brand with a digital presence.
AI agents are making purchasing decisions
Enterprise teams use AI to evaluate vendors and generate shortlists. When a VP of Engineering asks Claude to compare Kubernetes monitoring tools, the response shapes a six-figure decision. If your brand is absent or described inaccurately, you have lost the opportunity before sales knows it existed.
Consumer discovery is shifting to AI
A growing share of product research begins with AI, not Google. Users ask ChatGPT for restaurant recommendations, Perplexity for software comparisons, and Claude for professional referrals. Your Google ranking is irrelevant when the user never opens a browser.
AI-mediated discovery compounds over time
AI models train on data that includes outputs from other AI models. An inaccurate description today gets absorbed into future training data, reinforcing the error. Early APO investment prevents that compounding. Late investment requires correcting misinformation already propagated.
Brands that optimize for AI perception today are shaping the training data that will determine how the next generation of AI models perceives them.

Free AX AuditThe Five AX Dimensions
APO measures brand perception using the AX (Agent Experience) framework. Each dimension is scored 0-20, for a total AX Score of 0-100.
1. Discoverability
Can agents find you? Whether AI agents know your brand exists when answering category queries.
Drivers: Schema.org Organization and Product markup, presence in Wikipedia, Crunchbase, G2, consistent entity definitions, and mentions in news, docs, and industry reports.
2. Navigability
Can agents traverse your digital presence? Whether agents can locate your pricing page, API docs, feature comparison, or support channels.
Requires clear site structure, logical URL hierarchies, comprehensive sitemaps, and topic-organized content.
3. Operability
Can agents complete tasks? Whether agents can sign up for a trial, check pricing, configure an integration, or retrieve account data.
Only 8% of brands offer any agent-accessible API. Those that do score dramatically higher. As agentic AI matures, Operability will become the most important dimension for B2B and developer brands.
4. Recoverability
Can agents handle errors? Does the agent find an alternative for a broken link? Can it pick the authoritative source when sources conflict? Does it redirect from a discontinued product to the current offering?
Requires clear redirects, archived content with context, and canonical sources. Low Recoverability leaves agents confused by 404s and stale content.
5. Transparency
Can agents explain your offerings? Whether AI agents can accurately explain what your brand does, what it costs, and its limitations. High Transparency yields confident recommendations. Low Transparency produces hedging or omission.
Brands that obscure pricing or overstate capabilities receive lower Transparency scores because agents detect ambiguity and respond with reduced confidence.
How APO Scoring Works
The AX Score sums the five dimension scores. The process:
- Query generation. 5 standardized prompts per dimension (25 total) covering discovery, description, comparison, error handling, and explanation.
- Multi-model evaluation. Each prompt runs against ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini.
- Response scoring. Responses are evaluated against known brand attributes via pattern matching and AI-assisted analysis. Each dimension receives a 0-20 score for accuracy, completeness, and confidence.
- Score aggregation. Letter grades: Good (70-100), Fair (50-69), Poor (30-49), Critical (0-29).
Scores update continuously for Signal Track monitoring plans, and weekly for brands in the AP Index.
APO vs SEO: Key Differences
| Aspect | SEO | APO |
|---|---|---|
| Optimizes for | Search engine ranking position | AI agent perception quality |
| Primary output | Position in SERP | Accuracy of AI-generated brand descriptions |
| Key metric | Organic traffic, keyword rankings | AX Score (0-100), dimension breakdown |
| Target systems | Google, Bing | ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, enterprise AI |
| Content strategy | Keyword-optimized pages | Machine-readable, entity-clear, multi-format content |
| Technical focus | Page speed, mobile, crawlability | Structured data, APIs, entity graphs |
| Link building | Backlinks for domain authority | Authoritative citations for trust signals |
| Time horizon | 3-6 months for ranking changes | Continuous; model updates shift perception |
| Measurement | Google Search Console, Ahrefs | AX Score tracking, cross-model monitoring |
SEO and APO are complementary. Strong SEO foundations support APO goals, but APO extends into areas SEO does not address: agent operability, error recovery, cross-model consistency, and perception accuracy.
The APO Implementation Playbook
Step 1: Establish Your Baseline
Run a free AX audit to get your baseline across all five dimensions. It takes 60 seconds. For deeper analysis, Signal Scan provides a full APO Corpus Audit with recommendations.
Step 2: Implement Structured Data
The highest-ROI APO investment. Add Schema.org markup:
- Organization schema with name, description, logo, founding date, area served, and contact info
- Product or Service schema with pricing, features, and target audience
- FAQ schema for common questions about your brand and category
- HowTo schema for getting started guides and integration docs
- Review and AggregateRating schema for customer feedback
Brands implementing comprehensive structured data see an average Discoverability increase of 18 points within one model update cycle.
Step 3: Improve Entity Clarity
Ensure AI agents can unambiguously identify your brand:
- Consistent brand name across all digital properties
- One-sentence description appearing verbatim on your homepage, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, and Wikipedia
- Explicit category positioning ("X is a [category] platform for [audience]")
- Clear differentiation from competitors with similar names
Step 4: Reinforce Trust Signals
AI agents weight authoritative third-party references heavily:
- Analyst coverage (Gartner, Forrester, G2)
- Press mentions in authoritative publications
- Industry awards
- Named customer testimonials and case studies
- Academic or research citations
Step 5: Build Agent API Readiness
Even a minimal API gives AI agents something to work with. Start with:
- A public product/pricing API returning structured JSON
- Machine-readable documentation (OpenAPI spec)
- A
llms.txtfile at your site root
Step 6: Monitor Continuously
AI models update frequently, and each update can shift perception. Signal Track monitoring provides continuous cross-model tracking so you detect regressions immediately.
Common APO Mistakes
- Optimizing for one model only. The same brand can score 85 on one model and 45 on another. Cross-model optimization is required.
- Treating APO as one-time. Models are retrained regularly. A fix today may be undermined by the next update.
- Ignoring Operability. Many brands focus on Discoverability and Transparency while neglecting Operability, which is becoming increasingly important.
- Keyword stuffing for AI. Models detect this and reduce confidence in brands that appear to be manipulating perception.
- Neglecting negative perception. Adding positive content is insufficient. You must correct misinformation at the source, or it persists in training data.
Measuring APO Results
- AX Score trend. The AP Index provides weekly benchmarks against 500+ brands.
- Cross-model consistency. Decreasing variance across models indicates more stable perception.
- Recommendation accuracy. Periodically test what AI models say about your brand.
- Competitive gap. Improve faster than competitors.
- Drift detection. Watch for sudden perception changes from model updates, competitor actions, or PR events.
